Focus – Safest Sunscreen Brands of 2022

There has been a lot of talk about ingredients in sunscreens lately. Some of the talk even goes so far as to say that sunscreen can actually cause cancer. We’ll get into the debate here but also talk about the safest sunscreen brands of 2022.

First I want to talk about what I found in my research. No matter what the opinions are, our goal here is to avoid unnatural chemical ingredients, right? But I think it’s important to know the facts. You can also skip down to the actual sunscreen brands in the Table of Contents.

Facts About Sunscreen Ingredients

Ingredients that are generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE) by the FDA:

  • Titanium dioxide
  • Zinc oxide

These are known as physical sunscreens and act as a shield. They are also known as mineral sunscreens. They deflect the sun’s rays, sitting on top of your skin.

Ingredients that are banned in the US:

  • PABA
  • Tolamine salicylate

You won’t find these two ingredients in any sunscreen in the US.

Safest Sunscreen Brands

Many doctors in the US feel that using sunscreen of any type is better than risking skin cancer by not wearing any. Since sunscreen use is up by so much in recent years, the FDA is asking for more safety data for these chemical ingredients in sunscreens:

  • Ingredients commonly used in the U.S.: ensulizole, octisalate, homosalate, octocrylene, octinoxate, oxybenzone, avobenzone.
  • Ingredients not frequently used in the U.S.: Cinoxate, dioxybenzone, meradimate, padimate O, sulisobenzone.

These are chemical sunscreens so you can see why they are investigating their complete safety, especially oxybenzone.

  1. I enjoyed reading your review of sunscreens as I have always had my concerns about putting these chemicals on my skin, I can even taste them sometimes. A lot of them are so thick and horrible that they ruin the sun experience and I feel that they take moisture from my skin. I love the idea of the Suntegrity brand as it sounds like it will feed my skin and protect it. I will be giving it a go in our harsh Australian sun very soon. Thanks

  2. I have a very sensitive skin. And I am out on vacation this month. So, I would like to have a good sunscreen with me. I feel that my best option is Suntegrity. A friend told me it was very good. And now I read about it in your post. I try to avoid harsh chemicals in sunscreens and Suntegrity does that.

Wow, you even need to watch what Sunscreen you wear nowadays. In the past, we only had to worry about the SFP factor.

These sunscreens you have mentioned look great. My pet peeves in a sunblock are stickyness, to thick, too greasy and obviously burning while wearing the sunscreen in question.

I trust the ones you have recommended have none of these bad characteristics?

    1. These all have the least issues with stickiness, being too thick or greasy of the sunscreens I looked at. Thinksport is probably the best as far as those issues but is still very effective.

Thank you for reading and your question!

  4. Thank you for this information. I burn very easily and no matter how many times I apply I still burn. I’ve been trying to find a natural sunscreen that works. After reading this review I feel that one of these probably will help. So thanks for these suggestions. I’m sure some of these will help me.
